A few days ago I was thinking about how cool it would be for somebody to be building a web3 search engine right at that very moment.

Turns out that dreams really do come true (or I should get my psychic license ASAP). Not long after that thought, I stumbled upon a tweet from ICME announcing that they would be taking the first-ever AD space on a dapp called KINIC.

By the way, ICME is another amazing IC dapp I’m currently using to build my ICP Bulgaria website, but I’ll talk about it more in a future post. Hold on to your keyboard, it’s coming!

Right away, I started seeing more and more members of the IC community mentioning a web3 search engine called KINIC that is currently competing in the Supernova hackathon.

Turns out, it’s not only a concept, but it’s actually fully operational and you can access it right away. They have already indexed everything there is to see on the Internet Computer blockchain, and this is just the beginning.

But why do we need a new search engine when we already have Google?

Thank you for asking, imaginary reader. I’ll tell you why 🙂

First of all, I would like to make a disclaimer here. Everything I’m about to say is based purely on my own personal opinion and research over the past few months.

Of course, Google is a huge part of the history of online search. If it wasn’t for Google, most of us marketers wouldn’t even have a job in the field. But as I always like to say, there is time and place for everything. All technologies have a certain purpose to fulfill, and I think every now and then, they should be reimagined and rebuilt, so they can fit whatever innovation comes next.

The thing about Google is that it requires a ton of personal information from its users in order to provide them with its services. The more time passes, the more requirements there are for the common consumer to comply with.

If we take a look at the google analytics platform, for example, we can see that we are able to filter our audience into countless segments and demographics. This is a great thing for advertising, but do we really need a list of email addresses, names, physical addresses, and the location history of every single person? Is this ethical?

One might say, yes, if your data is on Google, you must have complied with their requirements when you signed up in the first place. Once you click that “I agree” button, you’re in. There’s no turning back. Or is there?

If a person’s online activity is not visible to advertisers, how would they know how to target their ADs?

Simple. They wouldn’t.

In a perfect Web3 world, the consumer would be the one choosing the ADs they wish to see and which advertisers would have access to their information. We’ve discussed how this would be possible in a previous article.

In my opinion, this will make room for more creativity and actual efforts to produce high-quality content and products. Instead of keyword stuffing, plagiarism, and cosmic advertising budgets.

So what is KINIC?

This is the first web3 search engine, fully operational on the Internet Computer blockchain.

You don’t need to provide any information, nor do you need to pay in order to be able to use it.

It is currently showing every possible dapp available on the internet computer blockchain. What immediately caught my attention when I first visited it is that you can browse through categories as well. By the way, my ICPBG website can be seen on the first page of the “Blog” section. I’m not bragging, you are!

This is huge for developers and online creators on the blockchain because we’re taking things back to their roots, where high-quality content and effort are actually fairly rewarded.

Not only can your web3 creations be fully discoverable and appreciated, but you can also be rewarded for your hard work.

Why is search on Web3 better?

At its core, Web3 is decentralized, meaning that there is no middle entity owning the platform. It is owned by its communities and it is fuelled by their activity. Either through investing or engagement.

As an online marketer, how many times have you wondered why is your fully SEO optimized content not showing on google’s result page anymore?

Personally, I have had several cases where I’ve had a perfectly good article appearing on the first page, and a couple of hours later it disappeared because of yet another unannounced algorithm change on google’s side.

This would not be possible on the blockchain, as the decision-makers would actually be the people using the platform.

And, of course, where would we be without our Internet Identity?

Access everything on the Internet Computer with one simple authentication iD. If you still don’t have one, you can create yours and start building on the IC HERE
