Currently, all known social media platforms run on centralized corporations like Facebook, Google, and Twitter. This sometimes leads to unwanted data leaking, storing of personal information, and having our personal information being used for the benefit of unfair marketing agencies.
In this article, we will take a look at the social media dApps, otherwise known as decentralized social platforms, already available on the Internet Computer. We will also learn how they can help content creators reach a broader audience and better monetize their hard work.
First of all, let’s break down the term decentralized social media.
What makes it different from the ones we’re using now?
Well, decentralized social media platforms are run on public blockchain technology. This means that they are not owned by a single big company. They are, in fact, governed by the community on that particular blockchain. Such governance provides freedom of speech and more security. It also prevents major data leaks, like the ones we are already used to in classic social media.
Decentralized social media gives the opportunity to “tokenize” the content you’re sharing and be in control of your own information. There are several platforms already that reward your contributions with various tokens.

Moreover, just like the platforms mentioned before, DISTRIKT allows content sharing with more security on its users’ personal data.
